Gascon Clarifies Review Efforts

02/08/2021—“Per my Special Directives, the office has embarked on an unprecedented effort to re-evaluate and resentence thousands of cases. There is also an enormous backlog of existing cases from the prior administration. The work is underway to establish a new unit to evaluate existing and new cases for resentencing in the most effective, efficient way possible—and to ensure no one falls through the cracks. By the end of February 2021, we will be posting the adopted procedures on the L.A. District Attorney’s website. Until then, there is no need to take any action to be considered for resentencing, other than to check the website for updates. Please be aware that any changes to an imposed sentence will also require a formal court hearing and a judge’s approval.”
